The begena is a box-shaped 10-stringed harp still crafted today from wood and animal leather, with strings made from sheep intestines. It symbolizes Ethiopia's musical connections with neighboring West Asia and the Levant, a long history of cultural exchange. In the mid-1970s, when the Ethiopian Revolution brought military rule to power, the instrument nearly lost its cultural legacy. However, over the past 20 years, it has been reborn, primarily among the younger generation. The unique sound, reminiscent of an analog synth and harp, is interwoven with the meditative harmony of sublime vocals that interpret biblical verses and incorporate numerous prayers in Amharic.
