“Ground Groove,” the third full-length album by Maral, an Iranian-American producer and DJ based in Los Angeles.

Drawing on her vast personal archive of folk, classical, and pop music from her native Iran—some of which comes from mixtapes her parents made in the ’80s and ’90s—Maral presents a further refinement of the distinctive “folk-club” sound she developed as a live DJ. By collecting, dissecting, and re-presenting fragments of sound from Iran, Maral practices a form of dancefloor ethnomusicology. The subject of this exploration is Iranian culture and context—both throughout history and in the present.

Conventional (linear) space-time collapses, crushed beneath the oppressive heartbeat of 4/4 time and successive waves of distortion. As each wave recedes, samples surge into the mix, perhaps in an attempt to fill the void. Voices and instruments rise and fall while eerie inversions occur. Overlapping, implied melodies flicker into view and then fade away.

During her college years, Maral taught herself to make beats using Ableton Live, eventually performing and hosting at various club nights. Driven by a self-taught, DIY impulse to create art and nurture community, Maral moved to Los Angeles in 2013.

Collaborations that go beyond mere sampling—such as those featuring renowned spoken-word artists like Lee Scratch Perry and Penny Limbo, as well as the collaborative track “On Your Way” with Panda Bear, co-produced by the founder of Animal Collective—have proven to be a vital element of her creative process. Maral is an artist who delves deeply into diverse genres—including punk, reggae, emo, dance music, and ambient— cultural contexts.
