スコットランドはグラスゴーの実験音楽家 Mark Vernon が2013年に発表した、稼働中の実際の病院で録音されたフィールド･レコーディングのみで構成されたドキュメンタリー･アルバムが、世界各国に眠る秘蔵音源を発掘してきたロンドン発の Death Is Not The End から再発されました。2011年から2013年にかけてスコットランドの実際の病院で録音された本作。MRIスキャンの音、人工呼吸器、医療用マネキンの不気味な咳や呼吸、病院内を移動する搬送ロボット、血液分析器など、33種類の臨床的な音･機械音が収録されており、病院の日常的な環境下であるため、無機質な機械音だけでなく医療スタッフの会話や足音も背景に混ざった、現代の高度な医療空間を「サウンド･アート」として捉え直した独創的な作品となっております。不気味でありながらも生命を維持するためのメカニカルな響きが、不思議なアンビエント･ミュージックとして楽しめる異色なアート作品です。

This documentary album by Glasgow-based experimental musician Mark Vernon—originally released in 2013 and composed entirely of field recordings captured within an active hospital—has been reissued by the London-based label Death Is Not The End, known for unearthing rare and hidden audio gems from around the world. Recorded in Scottish hospitals between 2011 and 2013, the album features 33 distinct clinical and mechanical sounds, including MRI scanners, ventilators, the eerie coughing and breathing of medical mannequins, transport robots, and blood analyzers. Because the recordings took place in a functioning hospital environment, the sterile mechanical noises are interspersed with the conversations and footsteps of medical staff; the result is an inventive work that reimagines the modern, high-tech medical space as "sound art." It is a unique artistic creation where the mechanical sounds—designed to sustain life yet possessing an uncanny quality—come together to form a fascinating ambient soundscape.
