London-based label Death Is Not The End—known for unearthing rare, hidden recordings from around the globe—presents the second volume of a South Indian film music compilation curated by Gary Sullivan. Sullivan is a New York-based poet, cartoonist, and the creator of *Bodega Pop*, a blog dedicated to digging up and showcasing obscure vintage and "outernational" music. This collection focuses on works produced between 1940 and 1947—the era just prior to the Golden Age of Bollywood and the subsequent fragmentation of the film music industry following the Partition of India and Pakistan. A defining characteristic of these tracks is their elegant, sophisticated arrangements, shaped by the rapid adoption of the "playback singer" technique, where professional vocalists dubbed the songs for the actors on screen. Preserving the authentic textures of worn tapes and vintage surface noise, the voices of these pre-Golden Age stars transcend mere nostalgia; they quietly convey the journeys of immigrants and the magical power inherent in song.
