Water Made Us【TAPE】- Jamila Woods

同郷のチャンス・ザ・ラッパーとのコラボでも知られるJamila Woods。

2019年のアルバム「LEGACY! LEGACY!」ではMILES DAVISやBASQUIAT 、SUN RAなどJamila Woodsが影響を受けた音楽や文学がどう自分自身と結びついているのかを楽曲やポエムに落とし込み、自らのアイデンティティと才能を深く捉え直した作品でした。

「LEGACY! LEGACY!」以来となる新作「Water Made Us」と題された本作は、McclenneyとJamila Woodsの共同エグゼクティブ・プロデュースで、客演に同じくシカゴのラッパーのSabaや、duendita、Peter CottonTaleが参加。

エレクトリック・ピアノやコーラスなど、ソフトで耳ざわりの良い、水のような質感とも言えるサウンドが美しいネオ・ソウル作品となっています。

アルバムのタイトルは、著名なToni Morrisonの言葉、「All water has a perfect memory and is forevertrying to get back to where it was(すべての水は完璧な記憶を持っていて、絶えず元の場所に戻ろうとしている)」を引用。前作とは違ったWoodsの新たな一面を明らかにし、彼女にとってこれまでで最もパーソナルなアルバムとなっていますが、前作同様にJamila Woodsが持つ思慮深い内面を顕にしています。

「この作品が、人間関係のライフサイクルの中であなたをサポートしてくれるプレイリストのように感じられることを願ってる」とJamilaはアルバムについて語っています。

Jamila Woods is also known for her collaboration with fellow Chicago native Chance the Rapper.

On her 2019 album *LEGACY! LEGACY!*, she explored how the music and literature that influenced her—including Miles Davis, Basquiat, and Sun Ra—intertwined with her own identity, weaving these themes into songs and poems to offer a profound reexamination of her identity and talent.

Titled “Water Made Us,” this new album—her first since “LEGACY! LEGACY!”—was co-executive produced by Mcclenney and Jamila Woods, featuring guest appearances by fellow Chicago rapper Saba, as well as duendita and Peter CottonTale.

With electric piano and harmonies, it is a beautiful neo-soul work featuring a soft, pleasant sound that could be described as having a water-like texture.

The album title references a quote by the renowned Toni Morrison: “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” While revealing a new side of Woods distinct from her previous work and marking her most personal album to date, it continues to showcase the thoughtful inner world that defines Jamila Woods.
